SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina was originally combined with North Carolina until 1729 and until 1732 it also contained what is now Georgia. It became the Eighth State in the Union in 1788. In 1790 the state was divided into nine Districts and in 1795 and again in 1798, these were divided into 24 Districts. These Districts became Counties in 1868 when South Carolina was re-admitted to the

Union after the Civil War ended.

More complete information on the various families appearing in the South Carolina Census can be found the South Carolina Section in the Southern Putman Section of this website.

UPDATED JANUARY 23, 2022

SOUTH CAROLINA 1790 CENSUS

In the 1790 census, the columns are males over 16, males under 16 and females of all ages.

DANIEL PUTMAN  Abbeville District

This is Daniel and his wife Sarah Kendrick from Culpeper County Virginia. He is a son of Zachariah (II) and Margaret Putman. He was born in Culpeper County in about 1745, and married Sarah there in 1765. With them are six sons and five daughters. He will be here in the Warrior’s Creek region until he dies in December 1821. Listing is 2-5-6. His line is Daniel > Zachariah II > Zachariah I > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas.

BARNET PUTMAN  Pendleton District

He is Thomas Putman's son born back in Essex County Virginia and is listed with his wife Sarah and 2 sons (Thomas and Ezekiel) and 4 daughters. They came down from North Carolina in the early 1770s. He will go with his sons to Kentucky and die there sometime around 1806. The listing is 1-2-5. This line is Barnet > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas.

DANIEL PUTMAN  Pendleton District

He is Barnet's son. He was born January 1, 1764 in Granville County North Carolina. He is listed with his wife Prudence Skelton and one son and one daughter. The listing is 1-1-2. Daniel fought in the Revolution here in 1781. He married Prudence January 5, 1786. They will be around till 1802, and then will be off to Kentucky and then in 1811 to Indiana. Daniel will be a Judge in Indiana, and will die there July 19, 1816. He is my ggg grandfather.

THOMAS PUTMAN  Pendleton District

This is Barnet and John's father. There are just he and his wife with a listing of 1-0-1. Thomas was a son of Zachariah Putman I, and was born in Essex County Virginia in about 1720. I think his wife is Elizabeth Barnet, but I have no proof whatsoever except that the Barnets and the Putmans lived together in Virginia and the Carolinas. He moved into North Carolina and bought lands in Granville County in 1754. He and his sons Barnet and John came to the old Craven County in South Carolina in the early 1770s. Elizabeth will die here in this decade, and Thomas will be widowed here in 1800. He is my ggggg grandfather. The line is Thomas > Zachariah I > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam from England.

JAMES PUTMAN  Union District

This is James and Joice Putman. James is the eldest son of Zachariah II from Virginia. He was born in Culpeper County Virginia in 1743. He married his wife Joice Prince in Granville County North Carolina in the later 1760s. He will be here in the Union District until he dies in December of 1811. Joice will be around till 1815. Listing is 3-4-3. Same line as his brother Daniel.

JOHN PUTMAN  Union District

This is the Reverend John and Sarah Howard Putman with their family. He is a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Putman. He was born in Virginia June 29, 1751, probably in Orange or Culpeper County. He married Sarah Howard here in the Union District right after serving in the Revolution. Her family was from the Union District, and the reason he moved down from the old Ninety-Six District where his dad and brother were living.  He will be here until he dies December 1, 1820. They are listed as 2-3-6. He is Barnet’s brother and has the same lineage.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Union District

William and his wife Mary Mitchell were just married and there are no children. He is a son of James and Joice Putman. He was born in Virginia April 10, 1766. I think his full name is William Abner Putman, as he uses the middle initial of ‘A’ on several deed transactions. He’ll be around till he dies in Laurens County in May of 1816. Mary will be here September 1838. The listing is 1-0-1. Same line as his daddy James. William > James > Zachariah II > Zachariah I > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas.

She will die, and he will marry a gal named Lucinda around 1820, and they will be around through the early 1830s, and then off to Benton County Alabama and be there in the 1840s. Lucinda will be widowed there in 1850. Listing is 10100 00100.

He will shortly head across the line into Georgia with his brother Jesse. He will be there through the 1820s, and then back here for the 1830. Dan is Barnet's son and my relative. He and his wife Prudence Skelton are both in the 26-45 age range. At home are Lavinia and Hazael, Reding, William, Elijah, Thomas and then one other male who I have no clues about. 41110 10010. This is my line through their son Reding.

He will be in Union County in 1810, and then in Williamson County Tennessee in 1818. He is very elusive, and I have very little on him. See his story in the South Carolina Section for some thoughts and more confusion.

THOMAS PUTMAN  Pendleton District

Barnet's father from North Carolina . His wife Elizabeth Barnet has died and he is alone. 00001 00000. This will be his last listing. He will die before his family moves on to Kentucky in about 6 years.

EZEKIEL PUTMAN  Pendleton District

Barnet's son. He was born here in South Carolina in the 1870s. He and his wife Hannah Brazelton were recently married and have one son, Elias. Listing is 10100 00100.

SOUTH CAROLINA 1810 CENSUS

In the 1810 census males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

By the 1810 Census Barnet Putman and his children had moved, most to Warren County Kentucky but Thomas had gone to Hall County Georgia. Daniel's family was mostly in Laurens County. Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick's eldest son, William, is now shown over 45 and Dulcy Watkins is not listed, though she is alive and is in the 1820 census and as his widow in the 1830 census. Problem is that the top corner of the page is torn off. Anyway the listing is 23001 310, and should be 23001 31001. He lives next to Reuben Putman.

DANIEL PUTMAN  Laurens County

He and Sarah are both over 45 now. Listing is 00101 00101. The youngsters are probably Susan and her husband William Henry Cross.

Millie may have remarried to a Joseph Prince (confirmed in a article on the Prince Family, printed in the Arkansas Historian in 1963), and remained in Union County as did her son Zadock. Her other son Bazel moved to Bedford County Tennessee in the 1830s and in 1840 had an older woman with him who may have been Millie. Not sure exactly what happened to her.

JOHN PUTMAN  York County

Benjamin and Elizabeth's son has dropped down from Rutherford County in North Carolina a couple of miles into South Carolina where he just got a land grant. His wife is Lucy Covington, and they will soon be off to Alabama. You can find out more about him in the North Carolina Putman Section. Listing is 10100 20200. Again, not certain who the extra older girl is and the two ‘extra’ kids are. I think they belong to his brother Thomas who will be here in 1820. He is also listed back in Rutherford County as 00100 10100.
